"3 days, 28 miles over rock & water out of the box" 2010-05-25
By PDT
I ordered these shoes for a 3 day, 28 mile backpacking trip over the Lost Coast trail in Humboldt County, California. This trail is along the coast over sand, rock, and has numerous creeks to cross. I received these shoes exactly 1 day prior to the trip, so I had NO opportunity to break them in. These shoes performed extremely well over the entire trip, crossing small streams, walking through the surf, over wet rocks and logs, in the rain, and through gravel and sand.
I was somewhat apprehensive after reading reviews that these shoes slip on wet rocks, but I did not experience this at all. Over the countless streams I crossed, hopping on rocks and wet logs, the soles gripped extremely well on smooth, wet surfaces. By day 3, and 28 miles, I had no blisters and my feet were the driest part of my body. The shoes breathed extremely well and I never found myself with a sweaty foot.
I ordered a size 11 Normal, even though I usually wear a size 10.5 Normal. The shoe seems a little longer than I am used to, but has ample room for liner + 2 pairs of hiking socks. After 28 miles of use over rocks, sand and gravel, the shoes are in excellent shape with no damage.
I am curious as to why some other reviewers refer to these as "light day hikers" - these shoes really are heavy-duty backpacking shoes. I would NOT want to wear these shoes for a "light day hike" or around the house or to work at an office.
This would be my shoe of choice for overnight or multi-day backpacking or hikes into wet or rugged terrain.

"Soles split with very little extended use" 2010-04-23
By Betsy W. (Sunnyvale, CA USA)
I used these boots for about 10-15 hikes of about 10 miles each and they were very comfortable boots or so I thought. I really loved them at first.

Then quite suddenly the right and left boot developed a split across the ball of the foot. The right boot then literally fell apart underneath me. The leather uppers show almost no wear at all and the Vibram soles are less than half worn.

Vasque told me I was out of warranty so I should try the store (the hikes were over a 14 month period). I was very disappointed in their attitude overall.

I'm only sorry now that I recommended these to several of my hiking friends. The soft rubber under the sole makes them very comfortable boots but in my opinion it also causes the Vibram sole to split after it weakens at which point the end of the entire boot comes swiftly.

IMO, some of the "glowing reviews" here of these boots were done by well intentioned people who have likely done a few less miles in them than I have. Check out my photos of the boots that accompany this same review on other websites.

If you want boots that will last choose something else. Bob.

"The boots are very good" 2010-03-12
By J. Ditter
These boots are really awesome. They work great in even the worst conditions. You may want to wear gaitors if you are in areas with alot of snow or rocks. Other reviews said they do not function well on wet rocks, but I have found them to work as well as or better than any other footwear on wet rocks. I got these for a steal when I ordered them! ($105 plus tax)

"Good intial impression on the Wasatch GTX" 2010-03-06
By Charles Lyell (Clinton, SC United States)
I have been looking for a good "medium-light" hiking boot, and have had a variety of Vasque boots, so I wanted to keep with this company. These are a good, intermediate weight, comfortable boot.

For those of you concerned about sizing, Vasque's are a bit dicey to get right. I have had 4 different Vasque models (Catalyst, Sundowner GTX, Kota and another one I can't remember the name of), and I have had both 11 and 11.5 fit me. The Sundowner was an 11, and a bit big at that; the Catalyst and Kota were both 11.5 and fit perfectly; the un-named (similar to the Breeze) was an 11.5, so I was really worried about the Wasatch.

It turns out that the 11.5 Medium width is right on. My foot is a bit wider than normal, and I have a high arch, and normally wear an 11 in street shoes. The Wasatch has a wider, higher toe box than most, which is great for me, as I have had terrible "black big-toe nail) on hikes down the Grand Canyon. The 11.5 allows my toes plenty of space, while the rest of my foot is held snugly by the lacing system (using Ultimax socks).

I'll re-post after I break them in fully, and we'll see how they do in the Wy. Badlands this summer (my Breeze-like were destroyed by the harsh terrain last summer!). These are far more comfortable right out of the box than my Sundowner's after a lot of trying to get them right. If you are forced to buy online w/o trying these on first, my sense is a 1/2 size larger than your normal shoe size is the way to go, depending on the socks you wear, of course. With the Ultimax's that I wear, there is still plenty of room in the shoe.

 "Great Waterproof Boots" 2010-01-24
By John D. Shaw (Albany, NY USA)
I've been using lighter Vasque hiking boots for serveral years - they are quite comfortable and supportive, but not waterproof. I anticipated needing a waterproof boot when exploring Ireland (and was right - plenty of rain, slippery rocks and mud). The Vasque Wasatch boots kept my feet comfy and dry throughout. My wife bought the same and was pleased as well. We recommend.
